Philology studies were part of the University curriculum from the very beginning in the year 1570 of the Jesuits College. After merging Vilnius University Faculty of Philology and Institute of Foreign Languages in September of 2017, the restructured Faculty of Philology consists of five institutes uniting all the academic staff according to their research fields. The current Faculty of Philology gathered together the most professional researchers of their fields in hope to implement humanities studies of the highest quality. For the moment, humanities and linguistics are the highest ranked field of studies and research of Vilnius University in International QS Ranking. We put ourselves entirely to fulfil our mission to educate philologists of wide erudition that have general university education, are able to work in innovative ways and that meet current requirements raised for graduates of humanities. Our students can choose from 17 BA study programmes, 13 MA programmes, specialised professional studies of translation and interpreting, and doctoral studies of philology. The research areas of the Faculty are: Lithuanian language and other Baltic languages (synchronic and diachronic approaches), Lithuanian literature (the history and the present), world languages and literatures, applied linguistics, theory of language and literature, antiquity and its traditions. The Faculty publishes the following journals: Baltistica, Literatūra, Kalbotyra; it also contributes to the publishing of the journal Archivum Lituanicum.
