Ministry of Energy was set up after Lithuania regained independence in 1990. Leonas Vaidotas Ašmantas was appointed as the first Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania. Later in 1997, the Ministry was abolished. All former functions of Energy Ministry were transferred to the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Lithuania.The Ministry of Energy was restored again in 2009 after the reform of the Ministry of Economy (which remains responsible for business innovation and investment). The current head of the Ministry is Mr. Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.
