Throughout the years, Kaunas Artists’ House (KAH) has gone through many transformations and has established itself as one of the longest-standing artistic venues in the city of Kaunas. Based in V. Putvinskio street that once was the diplomatic centre of Kaunas and now attracts both local and international visitors with its unique modernist architectural heritage, KAH hosts a wide array of performances, concerts, poetry readings, workshops and artists’ residencies. The diverse programming, reflecting both established acts and artists, and those who are at the beginning of their careers, showcases KAH’s goal to present a high quality programme to its visitors. Fundamentally, KAH, as an institution funded by Kaunas city Municipal Budget Office, operates as a mediator between artists and their audiences as well as cultural institutions and their visitors. A visit to KAH is also a visit to its unique building: the building which houses KAH was built in 1930, following the project by Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, one of the most famous Lithuanian modernist architects. At that time the architectural style of the building was a new development in Lithuanian architecture. Throughout 2017, KAH hosted approximately 270 events which attracted over 13 000 visitors. The vast event list consists of repertoire events, which are carefully selected, curated and presented to the audience, and non-repertoire events hosted by external operators to whom KAH offers its space, facilities and other services, such as conferences, annual meetings and so on. Another important aspect of KAH’s activities is its implemented cultural projects. Most recently, with the funding from the Lithuanian Council for Culture, KAH has become the first cultural institution in Kaunas to adapt its website content for visitors with hearing impairments. Moreover, KAH aims to make its events more inclusive to this community and to adapt their content appropriately.
